Description
A panoramic view showcases a devastated landscape after a tornado, with uprooted trees and damaged structures under a dark, cloudy sky. The atmosphere feels somber and still, reflecting the chaos left behind by the natural disaster.
A massively destructive super outbreak of 175 tornadoes struck Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee in April 2011. In Tuscaloosa alone, 44 people were killed and hundreds were injured. Tornadoes are common in this area, but this was the worst storm within living memory. And it may have been the most deadly ever for Tuscaloosa County.
Forest Lake is a small urban lake in the middle of town, surrounded by modest homes. That neighborhood took a direct hit from this tornado. Debris from Tuscaloosa was spread up to 20 miles away.
Three weeks after the tornado struck—after President Obama came to survey the destruction and declare it a federal disaster area—I captured six images of Forest Lake and stitched them together into a panorama.
